Truckoid the Rotatifying™

A 3-dimensiographilogical version of this old sketch, I'd like to have the trailer on there but gosh making that would be boring. You know what is interesting about this is that I started it spinning around last night and look at it, it's still going with no discernible loss of velocity. I may have inadvertently discovered perpetual motion!

It's the Cover of Faction Comics #2!

I was v* pleased to do this illustration for the second issue of Faction. It's a rad thing Damon and Amie have made, a full colour collection of New Zealand comic art. Hope they keep doing 'em! Check it out and maybe nab one over HERE

They're on the facebooks too, just like your kids!

* in this instance 'v' is an abbreviation of 'very'.

I didn't draw those ones at the bottom, they are stills from a movie they made about this launcher.

Here's the final drawings of the droids that were done to help inform the build of the practical props here at Weta and for the CG models.
It was a rare opportunity to really think through the construction of a design from the inside out and although I would have liked to have more time it was a fun and challenging process. A real noodle scratcher.
There were a number of full scale, high detail props that were made. Some of them were used in the factory scenes, others were for direct interaction with the actors. The final builds were rad as heck!

Although they were CG effects for the most part the brief was for them to completely cover the live-action actors without the need for digital removal. That meant they had to be quite bulky with large joints to help hide any movement that might break through the model. It made it similar to designing a live-action suit kinda (which these guys were gonna be for a while), 'cept I didn't end up getting the stink-eye from the costume department like usual. Got it from the 3D dept instead!

Here's the final basic droid design used in the film, pre-Lerification. Lerification is the process where Leri Greer puts decals and graphics onto something and makes it look 15x better. It's a scientific term.

This is the high-end, Lexus-esque version used as attendants by the high rollers up on the Space Frisbee™. Those jerks.
Although these were the designs that actually ended up in the film I was building on a lot of the work others here had produced. There were a lot of droids designed by Leri, Stu, Aaron and Ben that all informed these final ones. Neill, the director, was obviously very involved and these are very much the products of his input
I have a gigantic swollen arse-load of unused designs for these guys and other droids that I'll barf up on here soon.

Elysium - More Droids

Hi! You sick of ancient Elysium drawings yet? I hope so cos here's the ancientest one of all! This was the first drawing I did for the film and I think it was #001 on the project. Four years ago! Gosh a lot has happened in that time eh? Scientists discovered the fossilized remains of gigantic reptile-like creatures that once ruled the earth, a system to send photos of your breakfast between computers was developed and I got a new hat!
  Unused early designs

Designs for the Parole-Bot that gave poor Matt Damon a hard time.

Those last ones are for the servant/attendant robot that became the red and black one in my earlier post.

So there's a few of the droids I drew on this project. I don't think it's any exaggeration to say we drew over a million-bajillion robots during the 'gestation' of this 'film' and you know what? I'd do it all again! 'Cept a bit different. Completely different.

Elysium - Pistols

Here's the final pistol designs that were seen in the film. That one on the right is a taser variant.
This was Carlyle's customised gold-plated, ivory gripped personal weapon that was filmed but didn't survive the edit. On the right is some of the patternwork I drew for the engraving, I referenced currency iconography and poison ivy cos he is rich and bad. Deep!

Here's pics of the final props. They were pretty functional with recoil and smoke puffin' out, really impressive. Those Weta dudes know what they're doing eh!

Elysium - SMG

Here's the SMG in a few colour options. This was a fairly short design process but went through a few changes along the way. Initially I'd imagined it was a fully electric, fully automatic gauss rifle and you can still see a few holdover elements from that old design. There was a request for some animated parts to be added so it got a reciprocating bolt and recoiling barrel that moved on the prop. Definitely added some interest into what would might have been a bit of a dull weapon otherwise.

This was a brief that came in right near the end of the project for an underslung grenade launcher. Only got to do one drawing for this and we never made a physical prop, it was fully digital in the film.

One of the final props! I reckon they came out pretty rad. I nabbed a bunch of Leri's graphics which helps heaps and as always the 3D, modelmaking, props and paint departments did a bang-up job.

A LAZOR!

I was so stoked with how this thing came out, a really fantastic piece of prop-making. I think it's in the film for about 0.75 seconds but at least I got to threaten people at the workshop with it and drop it on my toe.

Elysium - Tattoos

Here's some of the tattoos I drew for Elysium, we did 'em right near the end and it was a pretty fun way to finish up the project. I drew them quite loosely in pencil to help them look organic and a bit ghetto when they were transferred onto the skin. I always make my drawings look deliberately crappy - totes on purpose! It was a kinda cool exercise, working the new weapons and other Elysium imagery into otherwise very classic tattoo iconography. Even represented Miramar all up in there! Surely that earns a key to the suburb.

The Last Days on Mars - Rover Concept

Here's some of the designs I did for Ruari Robinson's the Last Days on Mars through Weta Workshop
The first brief was for the rover/mobile lab vehicle and these were the initial sketches I submitted.

We went into a bit of an exploratory phase but quite quickly settled on a basic layout and scale.

Starting to figure out functions and internal structures. The shoot would involve a physical build of the cockpit mounted onto a truck chassis with the rest of the vehicle to be added with CGI so that helped define size and configuration.

Quick entry point sketches.

Cutaway showing the guts. I worked pretty closely with Ruairi to make sure all the required elements from the script were represented inside. I love doing this stuff! I've always been fascinated by technical drawings and cross-sections, would have really liked to have put a lot more polish and work into this illustration but this type of job is usually very... "time critical"

That's the final drawings that were submitted for the build to be based on. I really enjoyed working this up, it was really cool to be able to spend some time and nut this thing out.

The team at Screen Scene VFX did an amazing job modeling it I reckon. Right from the first images they sent through they had nailed the character and visual language of the vehicle, really brought a smile to the ol' dial. I painted over some of their work-in-progress 3D to clarify and resolve some elements that weren't too clear in the concept art.

The robotic arm had some specific functions it needed to enact so I did these breakout drawings to make sure it could perform 'em.

Here's another drawing I did... nah that's a pic from the film! Gosh what a trickster.
This was a great project for me. Ruairi's always fun to work with and I'm really grateful to him for bringing this film to Weta and, more importantly, me! I'll post some of the other stuff I did for this movie soon.

Check out some cool vfx process gifs at Ed Bruce's site over here

The Last Days on Mars - Lander Concept

Along with the rover there was a brief for a flying vehicle that would be able to transport peeps from low orbit to the surface. It was to be a pretty classic dropship type thang. Oops I mean thing!
I started with these pencil sketches...
...then painted up some quick variations based on the director's notes and selects.
Another round of feedback and a bit more development.
Ruairi drew over a couple and I painted back into 'em resulting in these^
One last variant I worked up that I kinda liked.
I'm not sure what it ended up looking like in the film, this stuff might have all been binned for all I know. Was fun to draw though!

Here's a couple of illustrations I did that were used on billboards waaaay back in dickity-twelve. I had a great time doing 'em!
When the nice folks at 99.co.nz contacted me to do some drawings inspired by the Weird Wheels trading cards I was all like "yes. Yes please."
Did I ever tell you I have a complete set of those Weird Wheels cards and they're framed hanging on the wall next to me right now? No? Remind me to tell you that sometime.

When working on the Hobbit I decided to focus on unused and rejected designs and in that respect I was highly successful! Here's just a couple of mine that came nowhere near the mark:

Mr Bitey H Smaugenstein went through hundreds of variations and you can see some of 'em in Weta's rad new book Smaug: Unleashing the Dragon

Hi! How's things? You're looking good! Like real good, dang!
Here's a few of the little airplanes I've been drawing lately, been trying to do one a day and am just about up to fifty of 'em. They're all done on my phone (Note 3) using the Sketchbook for Galaxy app.
I think I'll do a poster if I get enough of them done before I get too bored or start doing anything useful with my life, probably something similar to the Deadly Sleds one.

I'm posting them daily* over at my instagram if you're into that kinda thing

*almost daily
